Dorothy M. Whitmire Global Mission Services, Inc

The Dorothy M. Whitmire Global Mission Services, a 501(c)(3) organization, was founded by Tarinna Olley in honor of her late mother, Dorothy M. Whitmire, who passed away on May 13, 2020. Tarinna shared a profound bond with her mother, deeply rooted in faith and service. Established in 2021, the nonprofit aims to serve underserved and marginalized communities within the Washington DC Metro area. Dorothy Whitmire was a lifelong resident of Ward 7 in Washington, DC, passing away at seventy-seven alongside her daughter Tarinna and son. She lived in a working-class African-American community, which faced challenges like food deserts, crime, and violence. Nevertheless, Dorothy became a beacon of hope and support in her community through sheer kindness. Unaffiliated with any groups or organizations, she stood out as a pillar in her neighborhood. As a single mother for most of her life, Dorothy overcame numerous obstacles, yet she consistently found ways to help others. Tarinna’s commitment to community service was inspired by her mother’s example, who provided housing, food, money, and emotional support to neighbors. Embracing her mother’s philosophy that one should always be prepared to offer help, as well as appreciation to others while they are alive, Tarinna continues her legacy through community service.

The core principles of the Dorothy M. Whitmire Global Mission Service include:

  • Providing essential services to vulnerable seniors, such as prescription vouchers, medical transportation, and groceries.
  • Offering training for seniors on mental health and wellness.
  • Awarding scholarships to single mothers pursuing higher education in college, trade, or technical schools.
  • Organizing senior enrichment activities to encourage physical activity and social engagement.
